This past weekend I caught some amazing insights from a Facebook investor (and musician!) who hit the nail — or multiple nails — on the head regarding social media and where this is all going.
To be clear, I’ve never been a fan of being a “social media expert”. It’s well documented that specializing in a specific technology is a very limited, if not dangerous, approach to understanding how business and marketing work.
In Roger MacNamee’s speech, he details the biggest trends affecting the tech industry. Among those, the biggest three trends are:
- Microsoft is toast because we’re moving to a post-PC era;
- HTML5, the new web standard that allows to make interactive web pages, is going to revolutionize the media and advertising industries;
- Social is “done”, it’s now a feature, don’t go do a social startup.
What does this all mean for your business? What it comes down to is that people are mobile, they aren’t interested in proprietary technology that prohibits their use of mobile and/or web, and that building a business around beating Twitter is foolish.
